Anuradhapura

Anuradhapura, an ancient city located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province, is one of the country's most significant archaeological and historical sites. Founded in the 4th century BCE, it served as the capital of Sri Lanka for over a millennium. The city is renowned for its well-preserved ruins, including magnificent stupas, ancient monasteries, and elaborate palaces. Among its most notable features are the Ruwanwelisaya and Jetavanaramaya stupas, massive structures that exemplify the grandeur of ancient Sri Lankan architecture and Buddhist devotion.

Anuradhapura is also famous for its sacred Bo Tree, believed to be a sapling from the original tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. This venerable tree is a major pilgrimage site and a symbol of Sri Lankan Buddhist heritage. The city’s extensive ruins are spread over a vast area, with impressive reservoirs and irrigation systems that highlight the advanced engineering skills of its ancient inhabitants. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Anuradhapura continues to captivate visitors with its historical depth and spiritual significance, offering a glimpse into the grandeur of Sri Lanka's ancient civilizations.
